What to Look for in a Road Construction Contractor

Good Reputation: Ask friends, relatives and neighbors about the contractors in your area. Make sure the contractor will be able to perform like they say they will. Keep in mind the old adage "You only get what you pay for."

Estimate Considerations: If one contractor's estimate seems lower than another, be sure to check they have addressed some of the following issues:
  • Be sure to compare "apples to apples" : if one contractor bids 2-1/2" base material and 1-1/2" top material, be sure to get bids from other contractors for the same thickness specifications.
  • Water drainage and/or runoff: make sure the contractor has addressed the issue once more blacktop and/or chip sealing is applied. Will water run into a garage or basement?
  • Well-established base: if your driveway, road, or parking lot is new, or is deteriorated to the point that the old material needs removed, be sure the contractor has addressed this issue.
  • Grading: ensure site is graded to the proper depth and slope to ensure that, once site is paved, the depth of the blacktop is consistent throughout. Blacktop should not be used to level a new site--this should only be done to level pre-existing blacktop when another uniformly thick layer will be applied above.
  • Tie-in to existing roadways: when tieing into a state or local government highway, ensure the estimation documents for proper slope to the municipal road to ensure regulations are followed.
