Sealcoating One-Sentence Description After the area is first prepared, coal tar sealer is applied either by spraying or brushing onto the surface. Applications Sealcoating prevents oxidation of the asphaltic binder in blacktop (the "glue" that holds everything together). This, in turn, prevents weather damage, beautifies pavement, reduces maintenance costs, and adds years of life to blacktop. Description First, the blacktop is cleaned, usually using a blower and/or a wire-bristled broom. Then, for any cracks greater than 1/8" across, crack-filler material is applied. Also, any oily spots are treated with a spot treatment solution so the sealer will adhere. Next, the coal tar pitch emulsion (sealer) is applied using a spray wand, spray bars on a truck if the area is large, or with an applicator brush or squeegee. If a second coat is required, the first coat is allowed to cure for at least 24 hours prior to applying a second coat. Miscellaneous Sealcoating your blacktop will extend the life significantly, and is relatively inexpensive. Once a person weighs the cost of properly maintaining their blacktop by sealcoating it against the cost of replacing their blacktop, it is quite clear how relatively inexpensive it is to properly maintain your blacktop. To prolong the life of your Sealcoat, don't turn your vehicle's steering wheel while sitting in place, as this will scuff the finish. Also, heavy objects that exert a lot of force on a small area (such as motorcycle kickstands and picnic table legs) should not be let sit directly on any blacktop, as they will indent and/or sink down into it - try placing a small block of wood underneath a kickstand, picnic table legs, etc.
