Dust Oil Application
One-Sentence Description
After the area is first prepared, liquid asphalt is sprayed with a distributor, then dump trucks are used to evenly spread stone over the liquid asphalt.
Applications
This product is good for use on roads, driveways, parking lots, and several other applications that have had no prior asphalt treatments (other than previous Dust Oil Applications). A Dust Oil Application can be applied over sub-bases of many types, such as: dirt, existing shale and rock, and older Dust Oil Applications. Many townships and other municipalities (along with some private customers) use this to keep the dust down.
Description
First, the sub-base must be prepared, if needed. This consists of ensuring the proper material is selected and applied based on the estimated traffic load - a more substantial sub-base is needed for heavier truck traffic than one that will be supporting automobiles only, for example. The sub-base must also be compacted sufficiently to ensure a long life expectancy of the application and graded to ensure proper water flow.
Next, a layer of MC-70 liquid asphalt is applied utilizing a distributor truck. Then, 1B washed limestone is uniformly spread over the liquid asphalt. This completes the normal Dust Oil Application. Compaction is not required, but may be performed if requested.
Relative Cost Comparison
A Dust Oil Application, generally speaking, can be as low as 20-25% of the cost of a Surface Treatment. This is due to the fact that a Dust Oil Application uses significantly less liquid asphalt, stone, manpower, and equipment time than it takes to apply a Surface Treatment. When compared to blacktop, a Dust Oil Application is substantially cheaper, but these two options are generally not considered for the same application. A Dust Oil Application is not a long-term solution when compared to a Surface Treatment or blacktop, and needs to be applied every year or two after the original application, based on weather, existing sub-base, and traffic conditions. We recommend to many of our customers, when first establishing a driveway or parking lot, to do Dust Oil Application for the first year or two to establish a good base. Then, we recommend considering either a Surface Treatment or blacktop.
